Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Physical Therapy Assessment and Intervention Course

About the course

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Describe the detailed anatomy, biomechanics, and patho-mechanics of the
    temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and associated muscles.
  • Explain the function of the trigeminal sensory system and its relationship with
    temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), demonstrating an understanding of its role in
    assessment and treatment.
  • Complete a comprehensive TMJ assessment, including history taking, physical
    examination, and clinical reasoning, to identify signs and symptoms of TMD.
  • Integrate clinical decision-making strategies to develop individualized treatment plans
    for TMD patients based on their assessment findings.
  • Demonstrate practical proficiency in using various physical therapy interventions for
    TMJ disorders, applying a holistic approach that includes manual therapy, exercises, and
    patient education.

Learning Plan

Day 1- Friday

13:00 – 15:15 TMJ anatomy, biomechanics, and patho-mechanics.
15:15 – 15:30 Prayer break
15:30 – 16:30 TMJ link with upper cervical biomechanics and disorders. 
16:30 – 16:45 Coffee Break
16:45 – 17:45 TMJ link with balance and its implications
17:45 – 18:00 Prayer Break
18:00 – 20:00 TMJ link with fibromyalgia¸ stress, fatigue, sleep deprivation,
and biopsychosocial complexity.

Day 2- Saturday

09:00 – 10:00: Common TMJ impairments disorders and dysfunctions and
their risk factors.
10:00 – 10:15: Coffee Break
10:15 – 12:00 Holistic approach in assessment
12:00 – 13:00: Prayer and Lunch Break
13:00 – 15:00: Holistic approach in intervention (including therapeutic
exercises, manual therapy, and taping). 
15:00 – 15:30: Prayer Break and Coffee Break
15:30 – 17:00: Patient Education about self-help tips and self-management
home program.
